Company Description

300 million tons of plastic each year ends up as non-recyclable waste. Petroleum products are all around us, on us and in us. These products are unsustainable, unhealthy, and polluting.

These consequences of using petroleum are creating demand for more sustainable goods. Spero has created a platform technology for converting biomass into products that are currently made from petroleum. Spero’s platform technology for deconstructing non-food biomass into molecules uses patent-pending chemistry and advanced chemical purification technologies. Just like with petroleum, there are hundreds of products we could make with our technology. We are focusing initially on two products, plant-based natural vanilla and a structural plastic designed for recycling.

The vanilla industry is a growing, $1 billion per year market. Our technology solution will produce initially 1000 tonnes per year generating $70 million in revenue. Licensing of our technology will provide $5 million per year to Spero. Thermoset plastics is a $25 billion per year market. Spero will target licensing to sporting companies initially and moving towards automotive. Licensing revenues from our recyclable plastics will grow to $100 million per year.

Spero’s natural vanilla solution has been validated by the largest vanilla manufacturer and tested at a pilot scale. We are negotiating a JDA and path to licensing with a global leader in grain processing. We have secured $3.6 million in non-dilutive R&D contracts from the department of energy for our recyclable plastic technology and have begun conversations with companies for JD to bring our recyclable plastic to market.
